Thanks johnhategoblins, that was nice!

Outbreaks can take weeks to heal, especially the initial outbreak. You can't count the number of days you are having them, because it's all the same outbreak.

Since you have only had it a week, this is most likely your first outbreak (or initial outbreak). A little FYI for the future: a lot of things can trigger an outbreak. Many people with herpes have reported that stress, increased exposure to the sun, viral infections, facial injuries and eating foods high in arginine, such as chocolate, peanuts and walnuts, may increase the chance and severity of outbreaks.

The longer you have herpes, the less outbreaks you will have too. Since you have only had it a week, this is probably going to be your worst outbreak, the initial ones usually are. I have had genital herpes for over 5 years now, and my last outbreak was over a year and a half ago. In the beginning though, I was getting them 4-5 times a year.

Also, have you tried a different medication for it? There are currently 3 different kinds of tablets and one topical medication (ointment) for genital herpes. I also take Acyclovir for my outbreaks, but maybe you should talk to your doctor about switching to Famvir, or Valtrex. When I had my initial outbreak, my doctor had me on two different oral medications AND the ointment.

You should really talk to your doctor about this and maybe switch the medication you are taking. Good luck to you!

Your first outbreak will be the worst, your body hasn't yet developed antibodies to effectively fight the virus yet, but they will. If it is really uncomfortable then you should talk to your talk about things you can do to alleviate the pain. Also, if "Alli" answers this question, I would recommend you listen to her advice about HSV. Take Care, and know that this is the worst!

Oh and don't cut on your hans!
Just cut off your hands! OK?
