Well depends on who you ask. The real difference is that they are uneducated or old school thinking. They actually refer to HSV 1, which is the Herpes Simplex Virus Oral. HSV 2 is genital. They are basically the same. You can imagine how 1 can be a 2 and visa versa. They are created by the varasella virus, which is the same one that causes chicken pox and shingles.
The term cold sore is refers to the fact that viruses cause most colds and HERPES is a virus. Sometimes fevers which are caused by bacterial infection could causes blisters which is usually puss filled, but when they refer to the ones around the mouth it's usually a polite and sensitive way of describing a herpes infection.
People who have these infections are usually not dirty people but once HSV is diagnosed it doesn’t go away. It's like a HALLMARK diseases it's the gift that keeps on giving. In order to avoid contracting this virus it's best to keep the smooching down to a minimum.
