They are caused by a virus, the same one that causes a greater percentage of cervical cancer. There is a vaccine out now that can prevent it but I don't know about curing existing ones.

I was diagnosed with genital warts at the age of 16.Needless to say I was devastated as I was a virgin before I met this guy.
The doc mentioned that ... there is no cure for HPV.And the warts are usually just symptoms. The warts can be treated by the most popular method of freezing.Luckily I never experienced symptoms and had a normal pap 2 years after the diagnosis.Since then I have never had an abnormal pap or an outbreak and now im 27. I agree with the other posters.HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer in women.WebMD is an invaluable resource on this subject.

Genital Warts are unfortunately not curable. However, there are really effective ways of dealing with the symptoms. Having the warts or abnormal cells frozen will get rid of them but not the virus. I found out last year that even though I'd always used condoms the one time it broke I'd been passed the virus through the semen of an unaware carier of the virus. I began showing symptoms three months later and began very aggressive treatment to get rid of them. After three months of treatment they were gone and have yet to return. I've been with my current boyfriend for 8 months now and he has yet to show ANY signs of the virus. I was lucky enough to have had a wonderful doctor through out this whole process and during some of our many talks she told me that though the virus may never leave your body your immune system becomes better and better at fighting it such that once you've been clear of the warts or cells for a year the virus becomes dormant and you are no longer at risk of passing it so long as the warts do not re-appear. 80% of the women she has treated have only ever had one outbreak and after the first have gone on to lead very happy and healthy sex lives. Anyway- bottom line: the virus may not be curable but it is treatable and to put it all in perspective it's not going to kill you so long as you're proactive and do everything you can to protect yourself and your partner.

The warts are curable, but the virus they came from is not. You will all ways have the virus. If you have genital warts please go get treatment they will spread and get bigger. If you are treated early its easy er to get rid of them. I was diagnosed when i was 17 i kept putting off going to the DR because of embarrassment. after 4 to 5 months of treatment i ended up having to have Lazar surgery. it took 3 months to get over surgery very very sensitive area you know. when i was 19 and pregnant the DR told me if i were to have any warts come up that during delivery they could get into the baby's throat or voice box and cause serious problems. lucky me i am 32 now and have not had an out break since i was 17. you are not alone more people than you could imagine have some type of std.

Genital warts are treatable, but the virus that causes them (HPV) is not. There is no cure for HPV, so once you have it, you will always have it. But, you can treat the warts and they will go away. Since you have the virus that causes them, they can always come back though.

Also, joecseko, is talking about herpes, which is a completely different virus. It has NOTHING to do with genital warts.

There is no HPV treatment or cure for the virus. There is also no cure for genital warts. However, genital warts can be treated, either at home or at a doctor’s office

Absutely not if you are refering to herpes.Herpes is a virus and there is no known way to kill a virus in the body.Hence no cure for AIDs,Common Cold(Rhinovirus)etc. No cure for viruses. You may be able to cotrol the symptoms with medication but it will always come back.Talk to your doctor.
