Yes, unfortuntaley it is. They treat their pple horribley, how we expect them to treat dogs well? I know, it's horrible. They skin them alive. They are barbarians. They think dogs as rodents. It is repulsive and hideous.

First of all, consider the fact that these are Billions of people, and that feeding such a crowd has to be quite an issue.

Secondly, be open mined and remember that this is a different culture, and things we look at as gross or cruel might not have the same connotation in other countries.

So yes, in China and in other Asian countries it is normal to eat dog, rat and cat meat, to them it is just meat. I mean c'mon, we eat pig, cow, deer, and all kinds of poultry: looking at it from an open point of view, it is all just meat!

Of course, if you're anything like me, and have cats or dogs that you really love as pets. You don't even want to think about eating them for lunch. But to each its own, right?

Yes some people do eat dogs. I went to my local Chinese restaurant a few yrs back and asked for "Duck" ...due to my British accent the Chinese guy thought I said "Dog" Smiling it was explained to me that it was illegal to sell "dog" here in the USA but back home he ate it regularly! I figured out a few days later what the confusion was...and never went back...just in case. I also read that there are some places without any critters at all, as that was all there was to eat. I think if you are truly hungry you will eat just about anything.

Yes it is true. These are countries that also have a very poor human rights record and treat animals appallingly. They usually beat the dogs alive very hard too as they believe that beating them alive tenderizes the meat better.
They do also skin them alive. It is very hard for us to understand how these people can have NO feelings for animals, but they also live hard lives themselves too.
Yes some people also eat rats but usually only the poor ones.
There but for the grace of God go I.

In China they eat dogs because they did not have enough food in the past, and now they keep the habit. In Korea dog soup is actually a specialty and a hobby, some restaurants raise the dogs in the back of the establishment to prepare them fresh to their customers.

Ooh !!! I guess that's what they call a hot dog???

Rats? I heard about ppl eating them during famines.

Dogs?Perhaps in Korea. It is a man eat dog world out there.

Perhaps chihuahua is doggy chunks in chowmein,

Frankly speaking, who cares who eats what. I jumped back once, when in a restaurant, they asked meto choose what I wanted to eat , from among live moving fihes, crabs, lobsters. Not to mention I had only 600 bahts, and was afraid of choosing too exotic a crab for my pocket, if not pallete.

And pigs are adorable too, ever watch Babe?
And so are chicks.

I mean, who cares? Whatever you eat,if you are comfortable, and can digest it, shouldn't materto anyone.

It is all a matter of culture and history.
Koreans, Vietnamese and some Indonesians indeed eat dog.
Europeans eat horse.
Africans eat all kinds of bugs and caterpillars.
Andean people (Peru) eat Guinea Pigs.
Japanese and the Dutch eat raw fish.
... and so on.
Foods that we consider gross, others consider a delicacy.

Also, don't forget that for Hindus our habit of eating beef is an abomination. In the same way (orthodox/kosher)Jews and Muslims think eating pork is disgusting.

yes it is true. Dogs are just a food source. Just like we eat cows. Some people think cows and pigs as pets and would never eat them but many people here eat them.

I went to China once during their version of "Independece Day"...October Ist...it is tradition (in this province where a majority of people are Korean) to go to nice restaurants and eat dog. It is said to bring good luck for the coming year and is supposed to make men "virile." Hate me for saying this, but it is actually quite good. I would never eat dog in the states, but as the saying goes, "When in Rome..."

A small minority of Asian countries have dog on the menu, yes. But the numbers of people who actually want to EAT dog meat is going down each year, as people get more money and buy pet dogs! (No-one who keeps pet dogs wants to EAT dog!)

Rats are normally only eaten as a last resort - but why not? If it's eat rat or starve to death, would YOU really choose death? Especially if it meant your children starving too?

As for 'why' people in that small minority of Asian countries eat dog - think of it this way. YOU have lots of cows, pigs, sheep and chickens - not to mention fish, and an assortment of other animals that you might prefer not to acknowledge! In those Asian countries, there were no native species that were both large in size and/or quantity, AND good to eat. Dogs, however, in mainland Asia WERE plentiful...!

YOUR ancestors ate cows, etc., because they were available. Then they proceeded to domesticate them and they became 'farm' animals.
In Korea / China (and one or two other countries,) their ancestors ate dog because it was available. Then they proceeded to domesticate them and they became 'farm' animals.

See the similarity?

If it's a 'crime' to eat dogs, surely it's also a crime to eat cows, pigs, etc.? Especially as we normally only eat them because they are THERE! Because they are CONVENIENT!

Personally I would NOT want to eat dogs, cats, or rats...! But that doesn't give me the right to criticise other people who DO! I don't want to eat raw beef, but I don't criticise others who eat steak tartare!! (At least dog is cooked before being eaten...!)

Please remember that Asia covers a huge area, and the vast majority of Asian countries have NEVER had dog on the menu - except in times of famine, but ALL countries eat dog / rat in time of famine. Not just in Asia! Please don't get all prejudiced against all Asians, because most Asians have never committed this deed that you may consider to be a crime.

Incidentally, it might interest you to know that pig's feet - otherwise known as 'trotters' - used to be very popular in Britain. They're mostly used for making dog food now, but lots of people remember the food they used to enjoy - trotters, brawn, other revolting things like jellied eel, bread and dripping - and they want to eat them again! They DO eat them given half a chance! Even though they don't HAVE to, because Britain is affluent enough that there's food to waste, people LIKE things that remind them of their youth! Trotters do that for my Mum...!
; )
