For a while now, I've been getting extreme stomach pains along with feeling numb in my hands and feet, feeling faint and actually fainting, being extremely tired, and drinking all the time. My mom was conserned about diabetes, because it runs in our family. She used a self-check glucose machine right after I woke up, and the blood sugar was 197. When I went to the doctor, he told me that was a normal reading, and the different symptoms are just a coincidense. He diagnosed me with irritable bowel syndrome, and sent me on my way. I researched IBS when I got home, and I have none of those symptoms. Are the symptoms and the 197 glucose level something to be conserned about? Or am I overreacting, and my doctors probably right?
By the way,
I am a 15 year old girl; 5'6ish and I weigh 135-140.

I would recommend that you get a second opinion from another doctor. Your symptoms sound pretty serious.

A blood sugar of 197 is high. Blood sugar levels are supposed to run from 70-140, with levels rising up to 160-180 up to two hours after meals.
With the reading of 197 and the tiredness, extreme thirst, and numbness in your hands and feet, that is enough evidence for me to recommend you to ask your doctor for a Glucose Tolerance Test - http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003466.htm , one of the major accepted ways to diagnose Diabetes. The A1C test that was suggested earlier may also be used.
Diabetes isn't a disease to be taken lightly. If you current doctor doesn't want to let you take the test, find another opinion.

no, u r not a crazy patient. I've been dealing with a family member with diabetes. 197 glucose is high, get a second opinion,by the way other symptoms are, frequent trips to bathroom [ urinating] mood swings, weight loss and or gain. if it runs in your family u stand a good chance of getting diabetes.

First of all you need to see a different doctor. You need to have a complete physical done.... on you the numbness in the the hands is something else going on. You glucose level is a little high for your age but that could be caused my several different reasons. I'm not trying to scare you but what your describing could be a lot of different things go on. Have your mom make an apt. for a complete physical and see a different doctor..You need to have blood work done..

Your doctor should have tested your ac1. This is the only accurate way to know if your blood glucose is too high. Contact him with a phone call and ask for a 12 hour fasting ac1 test. If he refuses, then find another doctor, he is a jerk.
Good Luck...I hope your ac1 comes back below 7!

A blood sugar of 197 is a cause for concern. I suggest you need further testing with an hemoglobin A1c test for diabetes. See an internist.

still in a gray area, but it is possible u may have diabetes. after each of ur meals, check ur sugar 2 hours later...do it for 2 days. (probably excessive to do it for 2 days, but i would to be sure and to see trending.) if u get readings <180, then ur okay. no diabetes for sure.
also make sure ur machine is still good.
by the way, normal fasting glucose level= 90-130...check the ADA website.

Get a 2nd opnion. Those symtoms are very much a part od diabeties. And since your young & arnt overweight you'll have juvinille diabeties ( type 1 ). I've had it since i was 3. Im now 14 and know those symtoms very well. fainting = low blood sugar. stomach pain ( and fast heart rate ) = high blood sugar. try checking before you eat & then an hour or so after. Any more questions then you can e-mail me boo_cat2003@yahoo.com

It depends if you are drinking alcohol. That can make your blood sugar level go up. There is a certain blood test you can take. You have to fast for 12 hours for the test to be accurate. Get another opinon. Most things are not coincidence they are cause and effect.

Diabetes is diagnosed when your fasting blood sugar is over 126. You need to see a real doctor as soon as possible.
