This may not be a viral infection, it could be bacterial, you need to get to the doctor these infections can affect your ears and if bad enough can go to the sinuses and on into the brain go to the doctor and try to get a Z-Pak {Zithromax} you will start feeling better in a few days.

You should up your fluids (water and teas), do not drink sodas since they contain sodium. This will loosen the congestion and keep the secreations thin. Green sputum indicated infection which will only be cured by antibiotics (I know you said no doctors, but you really need one). Please at least call your doctors office and describe your symptoms. They may call in an antibiotic for you. Hot drinks and good old hot chicken soup will loosen the mucous; as will standing in a hot shower. Take ibuprophen or aspirin with food as these will reduce inflammation and ease pain. You can also use a vaporizer at night to make sure you get enough humidity and don't dry out your nasal passages. Good Luck.

Try a nasal irrigator. They work wonders.

In the meantime, use Pseudofed (not sure of the spelling) to help dry up the phlegm, otherwise you can develop a sinus infection. Since I learned that sinus infections are secondary infections that develop if you don't take care of cold, I have been able to avoid getting sinus infections, whereas I used to get two or three a year.

get Guaifenesin -- you can go the the pharmacy and buy Mucinex, but it's pretty expensive. Instead, I get mine from http://www.prohealth.com it'sl ike 13$ for a bottle -- take 3 tables every twelve hours with lots of water.

Gauifenesin is a potent expectorant -- it pulls fluid TO your lungs to help loosen the phlegm and mucus -- it'll help you cough that nasty stuff up more easily.

Avoid dairy products at all costs -- they increase mucus production.

Stay active . . . I also suggest taking vitamin C -- take 1000mg every hour for the first six hours, then take 1000mg every twelve hours. You should also get some zinc lozenges (JUST zinc) from the pharmacy area of your local grocery store -- take one of these every twelve hours . . . both zinc and vitamin C help improve the immune system and fight off infections -- don't take the zinc for more than 14 days, though -- because it can reduce the absorption of copper.

You may want to go to a doctor, as much as it sounds like you hate the experience. It could develop into something much worse like phenomena. Once it moves down into your lungs it could be very bad.

Besides all the doctor will do is look in your ears, nose and throat. Listen to your chest to make sure your lungs are clear and decide to give you an antibiotic or not.,,,,,,if there is sound in your lungs an x-ray maybe ordered.

do you have a fever? if yes, you need to see a doctor so he could prescribe you some anti-biotics which will fight off the bacterial infection.
if not, then it's probably just the common cold, or allergies. i get that every year, and it sucks when it feels like your ears are clogged. if it is not a viral or bacterial infection -- then it will go away on its own. it might take days to a week though.

one sign that your infection has shifted from viral to bacterial is if your phlegm's color has changed from white to green. Better see a doctor now my dear. No use doing self-medication. An antibiotic is what you need, something like Zithromax

Yes, green mucous does indicate infection. Drink not plenty, but LOTS of water. Eat oranges. When you cough, spit it out, get it out of your system.
Vicks has a rub you can apply to your chest and neck. Rest, good luck. I hope some of my ideas help.
