The damage to the heart muscle needs to be evaluated to determine the cause and then treat the cause. Usually there is a blockage in an artery to the heart and the blockage needs to be opened right away so that oxygen carrying blood can get to the heart. This can be done by placing stents in the artery or creating a new artery called bypass surgery or open heart surgery. Once the circulation is restored to the heart then it is very important to make sure that whatever caused the blockage is treated or the new or repaired arteries will just get blocked again. The blockages are often caused by a build up of plaque (cholesterol and platelets) sort of like the plaque buildup you can get on your teeth - only caused by a completely different process.
If damage is too severe to the heart, then the heart can stop beating, requiring CPR and a defibrillator. Sometimes CPR and the defibrillator is not enough because the damage is too severe and cannot be fixed so the patient dies.

As an EMT let me first tell you that heart attacks or MI are very serious. The leading cause of cardiac arrest is caused by MI. Time is muscle and the longer the heart goes without oxygen the more damage is done. Most heart attack patients generally suffer from heart dysrhythmmias, a second MI, and stroke after the 1st MI. These are the major things that can happen after an MI. Other medical conditions that are caused from an MI are pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs), congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation and a slew of others. Once the heart muscle dies it scars over in that place and can cause heart blocks in the conduction pathways of the heart. The best advice is to follow your doctor's instructions and take any medication that is prescribed. you have irreparable damage to the heart muscle unless you have surgery( if its that symptomatic) You could become a "cardiac cripple" in that you live with heart failure for the rest of your life.
