I'm not an Aussie, but my friend is, and she visited me and while there, gave me some Vegemite. Eeeeuuuuuwwwww, it took some getting used to!!! Way too salty for the American palate! It's burned dark brown color, and smooth like creamy peanut butter but not as thick and stiff. It's yeast extract. I don't know what yeast extract is, but that's what it is.

I did discover a good use for it. Put some vegemite in the water that you're steaming veggies in. Mmmm, tasty! It's like using stock, gives the veggies more flavor. I guess it would be good for rice, pasta, and as a soup base, like miso.

Vegemite/Marmite:
A thick brown paste made mostly from yeast extract, most commonly spread thinly on toast or sandwiches. The taste is mostly salt plus yeast.

Check out the offical Vegemite website for history recipes ect http://www.vegemite.com.au/

Still prefer Bovril to Vegemite...there's an option between beef and chicken flavour. Maybe it's just a personal taste thing.

It's actually Vegemite. I'ts a black salty yeast extract, full of vitamin B that we Aussies grew up with and it's awesome! Especially on toast with lots of butter.......Yummmm

It's a spread that you put on bread, toast, etc.. A bit like peanut butter. But tastes completely different. I suppose it's best described as having a salty taste. But it's yum.
