the medical definition of apnea is cessation of breath for 10 seconds or more. however any unexplained stoppage in respiration is apnea.
it is rather unusual for an awake person to experience true apnea, but if your breathing really stops even for a few seconds and it is occurring without any voluntary action on your part then you need to see an ENT or Neuro doc. This could also fall into the metabolic realm, a good internal medicine doc may help if thats the case.
apnea is not the issue. the etiology of why you stop breathing is.

It is apnea by definition. Stopping breathing.
It really is important to look at because if you do whilst awake, you probably do it whilst sleeping.
Could indicate a serious heart condition - so check it out.

Sounds more like asthma than apnea. I'd see a doctor right away.
