Through oral sex? And can it work in the other direction too?

Just something I always wondered. I know it's the same virus, but is it that simple?

Genital herpes can cause cold sores, but this is actually the least common way of transmission. You are more likely to get genital herpes from someone who has cold sores. In fact 30% of people with genital herpes got it from cold sores.

My fiance and I both have genital herpes. I have had it for over 5 years and he has had it about 8 months. We give and receive oral sex from each other a few times a week. Neither of us has ever got cold sores from giving each other oral sex. Of course we NEVER give or receive oral sex if one of us is having an outbreak though. So bottom line, it is possible but REALLY rare to be transmitted this way. If you are really concerned your best bet is to probably use a condom.

Yes. If the person A has a cold sore and he/she gives person B oral sex, then person B can get genital herpes...

I guess it could work the other way, but I don't know anyone who would put their mouth on someone's genitals that has open herpes sores on it...

Yes, there isn't any. Herpes is caused by a virus. Actually, there is little cure for viruses nowadays. The only thing that you can generally do in the case of a viral infection is strengthen the immune system and hope it fights it off. Not with Herpes, the immune system can't win against it. Thus you only get to treat the symptoms. Once you're infected, it stays with you for life. So don't get infected.

Personal experience. I have had genital herpes for over 5 years.

Yes, herpes simplex can be transmitted through oral sex. I read an article about it and I think it was on a commercial too. If you have genital herpes it can spread even though you don't have any symptoms. There is a medication out now that can help prevent the spread of herpes but I can't remember the name, I think it might be Valtrex.

yes and no...you can pass along the type of herpes (simplex 1) that is causing the lip sore .. and create a sore and thus infect the genitals if they have contact with the sore or with any residue or skin flakes from the sore. Genital herpes itself is actually simplex 2.
