Metoprolol is a beta blocker. It can lower your heart rate, It can make you sleepy and of course it lowers your blood pressure.
I take my beta blocker with supper on the advice of my cardiologist because it makes me very tired, so by the time I go to bed, I am ready for sleep. It does not affect everyone in this way.
I had to wean off a beta blocker to have an AV node revision - ablation procedure and when I was weaning down off the drug, i had palpitations, shook like a leaf on a tree and was very anxious. I have a physical addiction to the beta blockers, that is why you wean off of them instead of just deciding to stop taking the pills.
You can get major rebound tachycardia from stopping taking your beta blockers. Another reason to wean instead of stopping them all together.
Ask your doctor, I am not kidding. I am also a RN.

There is sometimes a risk of AV block, but the two are used together very frequently. As it happens, I'm a doctor with a mother who takes the combination, and it may help you to frame this in the context of my not worrying about it. The lesson to be learned here is that the internet isn't a very reliable source of information compared to an expert. That's especially true in medicine. Keep in mind that the US has a lot of lawyers, so if you look around, you'll find people saying water is dangerous, for fear of being sued.

Metoprolol will lower heart rate and lower blood pressure so make sure your heart rate is atleast 70-80 and blood pressure atleast 105/60 before taking the medication.

· sudden weight gain (more than 2 pounds in one day or 5 pounds in one week);
· chest (heart) pain;
· unusually cold or blue feet and hands; or

• If you experience any of the following less serious side effects, continue taking metoprolol and talk to your doctor:
· fatigue or confusion;
· headache or dizziness;
· weak pulse or mildly slow heart rate;
· diarrhea, constipation, gas, nausea, or vomiting;
· depression; or
· nightmares.
• Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
