There is no actual screening test for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. It is usually diagnosed when the patient first starts having symptoms, usually abdominal pain. They have to make sure it is not something like appendicitis as well. Since the number one cause of PID is gonarrhea, the doctor will likely ask about the patient's sexual history and partners. Also, gonarrhea is a reportable disease, meaning the doctor is required by law to report it to the Health Department. However, knowing that gonarrhea is the number one cause and will be reported should not make a patient delay treatment, as PID from gonarrhea is the main cause of infertility, as it scars the fallopian tubes. If a person suspects they COULD have PID because of sexual activity, just be honest with the doctor about what concerns you, and a specific test for the disease can be done without waiting for PID symptoms to occur. I talked a lot about gonarrhea because its the main cause of PID. However, since other infections can cause infection in the pelvic organs, there can be no ONE screening test to detect it.

Yes. This comes up very quickly in a pap smear. Sometimes you have other symptoms that show the doctor that you have it before that test shows, but they will still wait for the test result.

they do have a test for things that may lead up to PID. i'm not too too sure on a test for just that. to be 100% certain, ask your doctor.

yes, but they have to know what they are looking for. tell them if you think you might have it. dont just not say anything and wait for them to say something.
