I am an MD. AIDS or HIV is very similar genetically to SIV which is Simian Immunodeficiency Virus which probably has been present in monkeys for millions of years. There are reports of an AIDS like condition in Africa that go back into the 1800's, but it was apparently a rare disease back then, and probably transferred to humans by someone attempting to have sex with monkeys. It didn't get going world wide until it spread to Haiti in the Caribbean and then to Brooklyn, NY and then to all over the world. The CDC in Atlanta has narrowed the US entry point down to just 5-6 city blocks in Brooklyn, where gay people frequent. The virus is very fragile and it does not spread easily, with two exceptions: rectal intercourse, and sharing dirty needles. So there you have it.

The source of AIDS is a well thought out theory. Multiple infection crossovers have been considered and the confirmed source is from human contact with chimpanzees and small monkeys.
When scientists were producing Polio vacines with the available chimpanzees in Africa a theory reports the practice a high probability for AIDS infection to humans, a great embarassment for scienctists, and an expensive lesson for science.
