A sore throat is an infection that can be either viral or bacterial. It is most commonly caused by a contagious viral infection (such as the flu, cold or mononucleosis), although more serious throat infections can be caused by a bacterial infection (such as strep, mycoplasma or hemophilus) . Bacterial sore throats respond well to antibiotics while viral ones do not. For viral based infections, there are many natural remedies that you can take to cure a sore throat. Some of these folk remedies work within an hour or two, others take effect overnight. If you do not see improvement overnight please visit your doctor, especially if you suspect strep throat.

well, depends on which symptoms came in first? if a person has been coughing, and the throat has been itchy and later on sore, then it could be allergies.

but if it happens that the throat was sore along with the cough (with yellowish sputum) then im guessing that it could be an infection.

hard to tell, because you have to study the patient and have tests done.

As per your question, it is a non specific one. It may be allergic or may be in most cases, these are caused by some viral agents; sometimes bacterial cases are also important. However, you may take saline gargle about 3 times daily and / or, you may take steam evaporation 2 - 3 times in a day. If it doesn't resolve, consult a doctor.

Due to a horrible strain of bacteria people who have never had problems with their sinuses are getting all manner of infections that are leading to bronchitis and asthma. If you have not had it, I suggest you get one of those masks that you can get at any CVS - 5 per pak and wear it when in tight (metro) situations or even when walking through areas heavy in second-hand smoke.

I know it looks crazy, but it can save your lungs.
