My boyfriend recently was diagnosed with diabetes. He is thinking about getting a medical alert bracelet or neckchain. What are we supposed to have put on it? His name? Obviously his condition.... a doctor's name? (What if he changes doctors somewhere down the road, this necklace costs like $60...) Does he put a contact name and phone number? Or does it just say "diabetic?" Please let us know what's supposed to go on it, in an emergency, we're not sure how much information will be needed. Emts, doctors or nurses especially. Thanks a lot.

You know how animals get micro chips with their owners' information in it, and they insert them in their necks? Do they have anything like that for people yet?

Also, ladies, men, what is more manly, a figaro chain, or a man-bracelet?

just put 'Diabetic' and any special instructions if they are not normal diabetic needs
dr's name is not necessary
also put any known allergy problems

You're not vain. You just don't want the whole world to know you have a medical condition! I'm right there with you. :0) When I first started to wear a medic alert thing i had a bright red necklace and people would ask me about it all the time. I decided to get a bracelet and that has worked out much better. I have a plain silver bracelet that is obviously a medic alert one based on its shape, but it doesn't have a huge colorful emblem on it. Medical personal always recognize it, but i haven't had any one else notice it. Hope this helps! :0)

I have "TYPE I DIABETIC" on my med-alert braclet, and "diabetic" in english and spanish on a med alert dog tag. You can get ones (I think they look kinda stupid) that have little information tabs in them, but once you pull out the information slip, its almost impossible to get it back in.
I think that a necklace with a long chain is a better bet than a man braclet because more men wear chains with stuff (religious metals, crosses, ect) on them than they do braclets.
If you're worried about having the right people contacted if your boyfriend were to be found, I would encourage him to put ICE numbers (in case of emergency) in his phone, rather than get a Med ID braclet. The ICE people should have his current information, so his doctor can be called, ect. Besides, its way easier and cheaper to change contact information in a cell phone than on a med ID thing.

Put "Diabetic" on it. Also, frequently there is a wallet card to go with it. If there's anything else critical it will go on that and it goes behind the driver's license.

He could also carry a card in his wallet with more info on it.. I maybe wrong but I think there is something out with like a number or barcode that can be scanned and all the patients info come up for the dr.s....

Mainly his name and "diabetic" this is an alert to whom ever is treating him if anything ever happens. It helps the to determine what treatment to use alot faster.
