I agree. I have NEVER understood how someone can call themselves a vegatarian and then eat a fish!! I feel like battering them around the head with the fish.

Because it's easier to explain one's diet in one word. They aren't traditional omnivores, but they aren't vegetarians either. So what do they call themselves? I guess it's hard for them to have to always explain how they eat (Well, I eat fish, but not meat, or chicken, or...) And it's probably even harder trying to explain what a pescetarian is. So they say vegetarian and most people will get what they are saying- don't try to feed me a hamburger and wings!
I am vegan and I say, any bit helps. Of course I'd love it if the entire world gave up animal products, but that's not realistic. To come down on people who eat fish would be like telling them "why don't you just eat everything, then?" At least they are making some difference!

I know vegetarians who eat fish. But they are always reluctant when calling themselves "vegetarians." But they do so when they have to for lack of a better word to explain their philosophy.
Now the vegetarians who eat fish realize that fish are living creatures. But they feel they are a lower level animal as compared to cows and chickens. Also, some of these vegetarians realize that the circle of life entails that animals have to die or be eaten. When compared to factory farming procedures in obtaining beef and chicken meat (and even milk and eggs... yuk!), fishing just seems the less cruel way to go.

Well, technically, broccoli dies too.
People have different reasons for not eating certain things.
Vegetarianism does not always mean the person is into animal rights.
Not all people stop eating meat because it kills animals. Red meat is not healthy, so many people stop eating red meat while fish and chicken are ok with them.
Other people eat meat, but draw the line at things they feel are unusually cruel, like veal or lamb.
There is also a difference between 'vegetarian' and 'vegan'.
SAVE THE BROCCOLI!!!

To be honest, there are very few actual vegetarians when you look at the contents and ingredients in most of the food we eat. There is usually some sort of animal part in additives etc. But I do find it very annoying when vegetarians eat fish. I mean a vegetarian by definition is somone who only eats vegetables and until fish appears in that food group, I will not recognise people who eat fish as vegetarians!

I consider myself a vegetarian but I also eat fish, I guess the truer veggies would consider fish animals but I don't so thats why I eat them. Also I guess it depends why you are a veggie in the first place, in my instance I am a veggie because I do not like intensive farming and the treatment of animal and the amount of salt and water that is injected into chickens etc, but a fish as been caught from the sea and for its life has had the chance to swim about freely unlike the chickens! I also eat fish as it is a better diet than meat and I don't think you can get omega oils from brocoli like you can tuna, mackrel etc. I know that certain fish are farmed like salmon so I do pay the extra for unfarmed.

I am a vegetarian and eat fish occasionally purely because they contain Iron in vitamins and its essential that we have iron in our diets. I personally dont eat meat because I dont like the taste/how they are slaughtered. I class myself as Lacto-vegetarian so therefor eat dairy products. Dont know where on earth you got the idea that we think fish are some form of broccoli???

Most veggies r hypocrites who eat fish, wear leather or have leather sofas, eat sweets containing gelatin and drink alcohol, which is very often NOT vegetarian, then get on their high horses about how disgusting it is to kill animals for food.
I have not meet one vegetarian who does not consume any animal products in some shape or form with many of them not even knowing the alcohol they drink is not veggie.

They are not vegetarians if they eat fish. They obviously shouldnt be calling themselves vegetarians.
ALL the other answers here are incorrect. A person that eats just fish and no other meat is clled a pescetarian. I wish people would not answer if they are so clueless.
