My fiancé, who is a chef at a resort hotel, says yes. He says it'll make the skin get darker quicker, but it keeps them from getting soft and mushy for a few days longer. He says not to put unripe bananas in the fridge, though, because it stops the ripening process. He also says that if you store bananas with other fruit, it speeds up the ripening of the other fruit.

Sure you can put them in the refrigerator, but if you're trying to slow down the "browning" process, putting them in the refrigerator won't help. They have "banana trees" you can buy that hang the bananas over your kitchen counter and supposedly make them last longer -- no idea if they really work, but I AM sure refrigerating bananas doesn't help them keep longer.

i think of it became component of an promoting ploy initially to make purchasers extra conscious of bananas. (have confidence it or no longer, bananas weren't continually definitely obtainable. think of WWII, as an occasion.) Bananas are picked in an unripe state. They ripen on the counter. you are able to velocity up this technique by capacity of putting bananas in a brown paper bag so as that the organic gases in fruit will help ripen it. This additionally works with avocados. as quickly as the banana is ripe, softer to touch, you are able to placed it interior the refrigerator without injury achieved. relatively scrumptious. If the banana on the counter gets over ripe considering the fact which you forgot approximately it, you are able to freeze it. then you definately could make a superb smoothie with it later.
