I think cheese balls were invented by the family member who didn't really want to have to bring anything to the family dinners but felt under pressure to do so. What could be easier than to pick up a cheap cheese ball and a box of sale crackers? LOL

Example:
Aunt Sue bringing turkey and stuffing
Mary desserts
Uncle Ted wine and beer
Grandma - mashed potatoes and brusself sprouts
Sister Jean - cheese ball and crackers

Frito-Lay. They came out with cheese balls as just another
new product to market.
