Yeast infections can be caused by an imbalance in the chemicals that naturally occur in the vagina; usually when the pH levels get too high. For a quick solution if you are unable to get to a chemist for more pessaries (the tablets that you used before), try an external cream or use vinegar as a douche, to lower the pH levels in your vagina.

Yeast infections can also be caused by a bacterial infection. See last paragraph for more info on diagnosis/resolution.

I don't think that yeast infections can be transmitted to men during sex; however, sex may be painful or unpleasant for you both during this time. Exercise caution if you are having sex with women though; if the yeast infection is being caused by a bacterial infection, that bacteria (and thus the vaginal thrush) may be transmitted to her vagina.

Seek a doctor's advice regarding which products are best to stop the thrush; there are many different products available to treat different types of thrush, and it is difficult to determine which one(s) you need without a doctor's background knowledge.

Yeast infections occur when certain internal or external factors change the normal environment of your vagina and trigger an overgrowth of a microscopic fungus — the most common being a fungus called Candida albicans (C. albicans). Besides causing most vaginal yeast infections, C. albicans also causes infections in other moist areas of your body, such as your mouth (thrush), skin folds and fingernail beds. The fungi can also cause diaper rash.

Factors that increase your risk of yeast infections include:
Medications such as antibiotics and steroids
Uncontrolled diabetes
Hormonal changes, such as those associated with pregnancy and birth control pills
Bubble baths, vaginal contraceptives, damp or tight fitting clothing and feminine hygiene products such as sprays and deodorants don't cause yeast infections, but they may increase your susceptibility to infection.

It's not considered an STD, although you can get it from sex. Men can have yeast infections and pass it to their female sex partner.

It is treatable. An antibiotic called Diflucan is usually used. This comes as a 150 mg single dose tablet.
