Unexplained weight gain, or loss, accompanied by several other things, is one of the symptoms of diabetes.

My diagnosis was actually brought on by a loss of about 40lbs in three weeks, and an excessive thirst (12 Liters of water a day, and was still thirsty) which sent me to the doc to find out what was up.

After diagnosis, if you're taking it seriously, taking yours meds, excercising, and watching carbs, fats, and calories, most people can control the diabetes. Not excercising, or not watching what you eat significantly increases the risk of weight gain, and the risk that you won't be able to control the diabetes.

Some of the meds will also cause weight gain. The best bet is to talk it over with your doc.

As many of the others have said meds. can be counterproductive to weight loss. Talk with your doctor about what you are taking. If Type 2 you might want to read up on Byetta - which is a differnt class of diabetic drugs and ask your doctor if they feel it is right for you.

Medications that lower your blood sugar actually help your body use the sugar from what you eat. When a person's blood sugar is high it means that their body isn't either using(for energy) or storing the sugar from food(as fat), it's just floating around in the arteries messing up the organs and clogging up the arteries. Medications you take by mouth may either make your pancreas work harder to create more insulin(your natural insulin) to use up the sugar, or make your body more succeptable to insulin(your own insulin). Either way you are now able to use sugar, if you don't exercise it off, you store it.

Yes. No! Best thing I found out is eating more protein to carb ratio. Increase protein and eat way less carbs. Drink 32 OZ of water before, during and after your major meals.
