I just recently noticed that there were brown bugs in my rice. I started at first thinking they were dirt specks and washed them all out. Now I find that they are actually bugs and the reason why I know is that they move when you look closely. I was wondering if this is common in rice. I buy mine in the 30 lb. sacks at the Asian supermarkets. Any help on this would be great! Thanks again.

They're meal bugs that are getting into the rice and developing in the boxes and bags. Keep your uncooked rice in the refrigerator along with any unused flour too... It stays fresh a whole lot longer that way too. Of course, you might have to step-down the size of your bag purchases to fit in there...
dang you eat a lot of rice!
The rice you have now can be sifted to filter out the bugs. But don't worry if one or two gets through... they're harmless. And it adds a little protein to your diet too.

Actually i watched a tv show where they showed how many bugs are included in all the grain products you buy, such as cereal and rice, or even non-grain like canned foods.

They ended the programpretty much stating that no matter how many bugs there are, they can't get rid of them all and they say that they are actually healthy for you to eat.

However, livin, moving bugs in your rice means they moved in after the rice was made.. sooo i think that's bad :P find a new rice provider

It's pretty common, yeah.

You should always check rice before you buy it...even at the supermarket..in case it has been on the shelf too long. Usually that isn't a problem though...mostly at places where the rice doesn't sell as fast.

You should keep checking the bag everytime before you use it too...considering they can develop anytime after you buy the rice.

Pretty harmless though. I'd suggest buying smaller bags if you don't use the sacks quick enough? ;]

The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. Bugs in rice is not good, u take care that u dont not touch the rice with moisture hand.

Just Keep 3-4 Onions in the ricebag always. Due to heat and the smell it is very difficult for insects/bugs to attack rice..

Keep well dried Onions..not fresh peeled onions

Yes, dry rice can be a breeding ground for moths, as well as, little brown bugs known as weavels...they are harmless, however, not to gross you out, their eggs are through out most rice, but dies while the rice cooks, if you keep it on a shelf for a while, it'll hatch....

that happens when the rice is old and the climate in the room where they store the rice changes so you get bugs i suggest that if you bought the rice recently give it back to the store for a refund try to maintain the rice once you open it in a air tight container i keep mine in a clean steel garbage can that i purchase just for that purpose the little steel ones with lids.

Buy a smaller packet next time!!
: )

You should only buy enough for 3 or 4 months use - ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM!! The bugs aren't harmful - especially after being boiled!! But it's not nice to know you're eating insects...!
