Hemoptysis is basically partially digested blood cells that are vomited from the stomach. They are usually caused trauma to the stomach or a bleeding ulcer. They are also called "coffee ground" emesis because they look like coffee grounds and smell horrible.

Aspiration is a condition where you have gotten any type of foreign fluid in your lungs. It can happen frequently with older people who vomit and are bed-ridden. If they are not cleared promptly and properly they can suck the some of the emesis into their lungs when they try to breathe. This sets up a septic condition in the lungs which invariably degenerates into pneumonia.

Pulmonology (aka Pneumology) is the specialty that deals with diseases of the lungs and the respiratory tract. It is called chest medicine and respiratory medicine in some countries and areas. Pulmonology is generally considered a branch of internal medicine, although it is closely related to intensive care medicine when dealing with patients requiring mechanical ventilation. Surgery of the respiratory tract is generally performed by specialists in cardiothoracic surgery (or thoracic surgery). Chest medicine is not a specialty in itself but is an inclusive term which pertains to the treatment of diseases of the chest and contains the fields of pulmonology, thoracic surgery, and intensive care medicine. Pulmonology is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases, as well as secondary prevention (tuberculosis). Physicans specializing in this area are called pulmonologists.

hemoptysis is the medical term for coughing up blood. the blood can be contained in sputum, present as clots, or be frank bleeding. the source can be a lesion, necrotizing pneumonia, bronchiectasis, tb, or many other possibilites. its scary to say the least but under the right care can be treated appropriately.

aspiration is the inhaling of a foriegn body, that can be food, a marble, a penny, gum. pollens, dusts, etc. you get the picture, it is not part of the lung anatomy its foriegn. the body responds initially with hard coughing. if that doesn't clear it then the body begins to seal off the item, or attempt to digest the item by macrophages, either of which can cause putrifactio resulting in bloody sputum, smelly sputum, or foul breath.. this is all just generalization of some very specific circumstances.

pulmonology is the study and treatment of the lungs as an organ and diseases which are pulmonary diseases. a pulmonologist is a doctor who specializes in pulmonary diseases. respiratory therapists are like pulmonary doctors but are limited to the treatment and care of pulmonary patients under the direction of a pulmonologist, or other attending physician.

if you have any hemoptysis, or have aspirated something, then you need to get treatment. bronchoscopy can retrieve the foreign body, and medication or bronchoscopy and biopsy may be needed to treat the hemoptysis depending on the root cause.

Hemoptysis is bloody sputum and aspiration is when any foreign material is taken into the lungs. Many elderly patients have a problem with aspiration. They eat or drink and the food or liquid gets inhaled into the lungs instead of it being properly swallowed. This often causes pneumonia. I hope this helps you out.
