Though its name suggests that it is a nut, I've always regarded coconut as a fruit. When the coconut is young, it has properties like fruit, and as it matures, it becomes more nutty. But in fact it is not a nut or a fruit; it is a seed.

The coconut is a drupe, a type of fruit in which an outer fleshy part surrounds a shell. It's not a true nut.

Definitely a fruit. I don't know if it's really a nut though, because a palm is not technically a tree. I think a nut comes from a tree; for instance, a peanut is not really a nut, but a legume. Also, nuts don't have liquid inside.

I always considered it a fruit lol.
But apparently it is both.
Check out the attached website with FAQs on coconuts.
A nut is a fruit, according to UC Davis's Pomology Department.

well, there aren't too many nuts that you can drink, that i can think of.
i'd be more apt to say it's a fruit, but certain botanists consider it both from what i hear.
i think it's in a class by itself, not really a fruit, and not really a nut.

Botanically speaking, all seed-containing products of plants are fruits. (We speak of a tomato plant "setting fruit," not "setting vegetable.") The designations of nuts, vegetables, etc. are purely a matter of convention and have no real basis in science.
