From the late seventies on Yorkie's main advertising campaign featured big, hunky (male) long distance lorry drivers biting into the snack. This didn't really fit with the supposedly politically correct cultural consciousness of youth in the eighties but by the mid-nineties 'lad culture' found the media able to promote imagery that had previously been dubbed as 'sexist', under the guise of it being used in an ironic way.
The 'Not For Girls' line is a succinct example of this irony. Everybody knows that chocolate bars can be eaten by men, women, boys and girls alike. So it is partly an allusion back to the lorry drivers which kind of said the same thing, without being so obviously ironic.
It raises a lot of questions. It is a heavily sexist advertising line but is so obviously tongue-in-cheek as to suggest that 'sexism' and any debate over gender equality is a thing of the past, which it probably isn't.

It was supposed to be too big and chunky for girls. It wasn't a terribly funny slogan when it first came out, it isn't now.
Of course the real reason girls don't buy Yorkie is because it tastes horrible. Cheap chocolate - yuk.

My boyfriend tried it, he said it was just ok. So evidentally, us girls aren't missing anything ;)

Yes, it does seem weird when girls generally love to gorge themselves on chocolate, whereas real men only eat meat.

I'm sure that it because they mean their chocolate is not for the squeamish or fussy pots. Anyway we all know we girls are not all like that so there.

When it was first marketed, the ad was aimed a big hunky truckers! Don't ask me why, so I suppose it's something to do with that.
