Peanut butter is a "staple" of the US diet.. and has been for about a century!
A simple paste made of ground peanuts...either smooth or crunchy...
It is used for cooking...mainly in cakes, pies and cookies
And...
Most kids have a soft spot for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, (preferably concord grape jelly, which is also typically american, but any dark red fruit jelly would do) or with a meringue type cream called marshmallow fluff.
For savoury sandwiches...beanut butter and crunchy bacon is quite tasty...
As to saté sauce, yes I think peanut butter would be a nice shortcut to make your indonesian sauce. (I don't have the recipe for saté sauce at hand, I would have to go look it up in the kitchen, but that sounds feasible).
(Peanut butter was invented in the late 19th century in several parts of the world by different people. The man who developed it in the southern US, was: George Washington Carver (an afro american botanist & scientist... Brilliant man!... Look up his biography in internet)
The main american peanut butter brands have pages with recipes in internet. Try Jiffy for example.

Yes, I know what peanut butter is...and yes, you can make peanut butter sauces from it...also used to make cookies, sauces, fudge, etc...the list goes on.
Here is satay sauce:
2/3 c Crunchy peanut butter 1 1/2 c Coconut milk, unsweetened 1/4 c Freshly squeezed lemon juice 2 tb Soy sauce 2 tb Molasses (or brown sugar) 1 ts Fresh ginger root, grated 4 Garlic cloves, minced 1/4 c Chicken broth 1/4 c Heavy cream Cayenne pepper Grated lime zest Fresh cilantro sprigs.
To make the marinade, combine the first 7 ingredients in a shallow dish. Thread the chicken strips onto bamboo skewers in a serpentine fashion. Place the skewers into the soy sauce mixture and let marinate in the refrigerator at least 2 hours, although overnight is preferable.
Make the peanut sauce by combining the next 7 ingredients (peanut butter through garlic) in a saucepan. Season to taste with cayenne pepper. Cook over moderate heat, stirring constantly, until the sauce is as thick as heavy cream (about 15 minutes). Transfer to a food processor or blender and pur?e briefly. Add chicken broth and cream and blend until smooth. This mixture can be made several hours ahead and stored in the refrigerator. Bring to room temperature before serving.

Peanut butter has got a LOT of oil in it ... I think that point should be made clear to you!! Other than that, it's just chopped or ground up peanuts, salt, and apparently sometimes sugar!
As for whether you can use it for satay sauce, only if you can find a recipe designed for that purpose! Otherwise, I'd find someone from a country where they actually EAT peanut saté sauce, and ask them for a recipe! (Actually, I believe you've already got a reply from someone who's been eating satay all her life...!)
I assume you DID mean satay? I've never heard of a food called saté - maybe it's just another way of spelling it..!?!

George Washinton Carver invented peanut butter here in the US. We use it as a sandwich spread sometimes with fruit jelly or jam. Generally the sauce is not in common usage...I think that's more an Oriential and perhaps Caribbean thing. You might enjoy reading a bit about Carver, one of truly great black Americans.

Peanut butter in the USA is mainly ground peanuts( finely ground, sometimes with the consistency of wall plaster). sometimes they add salt and sugar . the more refined brands are not as good for making sate, but some of the organic peanut butters are great for sate .
