Listen when you say you are a vegetarian, don't look at them as if you are ashamed of that fact. In our society, people eat more meat then vegetables, that's why they look at you differently, it's because you are different than the 99.99% of America, i just want to tell you keep being a vegetarian in the end you are the one that's going to be free from heart malfunctions, and vein problems and every thing you're just going to be healthy.

It is still more the norm to eat meat and so being a vegetarian is something different (although less so now than it has been). People are generally interested in things that are different from the norm. Don't take offence, people are just showing and interest in an important aspect of your life - I am sure they have nothing against you not eating meat either, they are just curious as to why. There can be many reasons as to why people don't eat meat - they think it is healthier, they feel eating animals is wrong, they are allergic to meat etc etc, so people are curious as to what your reason might be. If someone becomes intrusive with asking you about it, then just politely tell them that it is not big deal to you and you would rather not discuss it further and that should be the end of it.

No one's ever really said anything about me being a vegetarian. I'm not a fussy eater, I pretty much eat anything that anyone gives me so I don't really cause problems.
It's when someone is a vegetarian and then they don't like vegetables, or pasta or fruit. That's when life gets complicated.
When I did eat meat (over 13 years ago) I did like it, it's just a personal choice not to eat it because a) I don't need it, I'm fine without, b) I'm probably healthier for it, c) I love seeing baby lambs and pigs and cows, I couldn't eat them, d) they are fed that many chemicals and steroids - there is nothing humain about farming these days.
I also don't drink Coke (even though I love the taste) because I think the Coca Cola company are immoral, same with McDonalds, Starbucks...
It's good to have principles. Most people don't these days and the worlds a sorrier place for it.

Can't believe that in this day and age people STILL think being a vegetarian is strange. Tell them you are allergic to the enzyme in meat and they won't question you any more. If peoople are allergic to milk nobody bothers to carry on asking them why. At a restaurant where I was recently where there was a carvery as well as lots of lovely veggies and salads people couldn't believe that I didn't choose the gut clogging meat to go with the veggies.

Well i think people tend to ask over and over "why?" because to them there is nothing tastier than meat. I personally LOVE meat and couldnt see how someone could refuse eating it. That goes for everyone else as well..they just want to know how u can turn down something that tastes delicious. Plus, some vegetarians have interesting reasons for why..like some traumatic experience, etc..so i guess that's the other reason for asking...just to hear a story.

One time I had a group of friends I hang around with. One of the friend Is a vegetarian, we always have a great time doing things together except eating.
We went to a Chinese restaurant, she looked through the menu and started telling everybody what she can not eat. We told her that we could order some vegetables, but she did not want it to be cooked with animal fat, It went on and on, that was no fun.
I guess the point that I am trying to make is that maybe they LIKE you and wants to do more with you, and not have to worry about what you can eat.
I always liked being around her because she was nice and funny to be with. One day she got married to a non-veg, her first rule in the home was 'do not use her pan to cook dead animal. BOY!, I glad I didn't marry her.

I guess they are just curious about it. Maybe you should use it as a time to educate people on it even though it is very annoying. I do find it interesting that you have never eaten meat, even as a child. I wouldn't question you about it though when I first met you, I know that is RUDE! It's unfortunate that some people don't have anything else to talk about that your personal preferences of what to eat.

They ask because most people were brought up meat eaters and chose to change because of strong beliefs or medical reasons. Many of them will be only to free to tell us meat eaters why they did and attack us for eating meat. It is a polite way to allow the person to explain without opening up the social gathering to a conflict/telling off.

Most often people want to know whether you are a vegetarian because you don't like meat (which is fine with everyone) or because you have some lameass beleif that eating meat is somehow morally wrong, which it isn't. If you want people to like you, tell them it is because you don't like the taste of meat. No one likes a hippie.
