My mother died of Mitral Valve Prolapse when she was 58.
She had rheumatic heart fever as a child which can cause a stenosis of the heart valve, thickening of her mitral valve.
Strep Throat also can be a culprit for this defect.
My mother didn't take good care of herself.
She had a bad diet, lots of stress & was a smoker.
I think she would have lived longer if, the above habits had been improved earlier.
I think you can have a long, full, & healthy life, if you take care of your health. It's a good think you found out when you did.
It sounds like your mom's health was already compromised.
I hope you have a good support system to help you deal with your loss.

I am very sorry for your loss I hope you are doing well. The condition you speak about is called Mitral Valve Prolapse:

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a heart valve condition marked by the displacement of an abnormally thickened mitral valve leaflet into the left atrium during systole. In its nonclassic form, MVP carries a low risk of complications. In severe cases of classic MVP, complications include mitral regurgitation, infective endocarditis, and — in rare circumstances — cardiac arrest usually resulting in sudden death.

I would not presume to try to tell you all the things which might have happened just know that she was in a weakened state and did not suffer. God bless you in your time of loss.

Hello
I am sorry for your loss.

Mitral valve prolapse is not a killer. It is simply the valve opening being pushed back a little. It may cause a slight decrease in the cardiac output but you shouldn't notice anything.

So you do not need to worry.
