Day-O or the Banana Boat Song made popular by Harry Belafonte originated among the plantation workers on the Caribbean Islands (Jamaica and other smaller ones).
The work of loading the heavy banana bunches was very strenuous, especially in daytime under the hot sun. That is why they preferred to work at night and kept going by a swig of rum from time to time.

What kept them going was the "Mannish Water", "Fish Tea" and "Rum Punch" that the song goes on to say they ingested. Mannish Water is a traditional Jamaican soup made from goat brains and testicles with a lot of root vegetables, green bananas and hot "Scotch Bonnet" peppers added for flavor. It is reputed to be a potent aphrodisiac and energizer, and is very popular at parties, festivals and other celebrations in Jamaica. Fish Tea is a broth type soup that is made from vegetables and the head and other cuttings of the fish and is also reputed to have energy giving properties apart from being an overall healthy meal. As for the Rum Punch, Jamaican Rum Punch spiked with anyone of our world famous rums is enough to put the pep in anyone's step. So there you have it that is what kept them going...... apart from the fact that they wanted to get paid for their work.
