Yes, it's quite common. My father also had this happen to him. He had symptoms, but thought that he just had an ulcer because the symptoms at first were not the classic signs of a heart attack. He continued to work for two months before going to the doctor, when he found out what had really happened.

Your mother sounds as though she tries to be healthy. However, even people that eat right and exercise and don't smoke or drink excessively can develop heart problems. Genetics plays a part in the health of us all, as does simply growing older.

"Heart attack" is a scary thing to hear, but it doesn't always mean that a person is about to die or that their life will be completely changed. Talk to your mother's doctor, and to her as well. Make sure that she follows the diet, activity restrictions if any, medication schedule, and any other recommendations her doctor gives her.

Best of luck.

Very common, it is called a silent heart attack. Not all people have the classic symptoms of left arm pain, or jaw pain, or chest pain. Some people experience no pain at all, they may feel lousy but think they are coming down with something and the problems is gone in a short while. I have had a family member die of a massive heart attack and at autopsy found he had 3 prior heart attacks and never knew it.

I think it is common because I have had two heart attacks and was in the intensive care section of the hospital for a week each time and the second time, I had to go for rehab. in another hospital because of my legs. I had severe leg infections both times, so I think that is why I had the attacks plus I am obese too.

What makes me think it is common is because both times, I didn't pass out. Both times, I didn't have any chest pain and no heart palpitations, and no pains whatsoever, so both times, I didn't know I had a heart attack. In fact, the second time, in the ambulance, my pulse was normal and didn't increase until they got me to the hospital. I do know that a lot of people just think they had heartburn from a meal. So, actually, I didn't experience anything except my wife wanted to know why I was not acting the same. I had to go and get someone myself to take me to the hospital.

I am 63 and 1/2 years old.

in women, this is very common. in alot of women, symptoms of a heart attack dont manifest thsemselves as the typical heart attack symptoms, such as chest pain, pain down the left arm and into the jaw, etc...women will often experience nausea and vomiting, what feels like indigestion, abdominal cramping, and other stomach issues (excessive gas)...these are just as much signs of heart attack as are the "normal" ones you hear about everyday. it just so happens that women experience these much more often than men. she could have had what she thought was bad heartburn one day when it was really a small heart attack.

Yes it is,

It is called a silent heart attack, and sometimes the people feel a little discomfort and they pass it off as gas or indigestion.

Diabetics really have to be careful as most of them will not have the chest pain as anyone else.
