cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder, that is inherited autosomally and is recessive, that means that it is on any of your somatic not sex chromosomes-and you need two alleles or forms of the trait to get this condition...CF is a very lethal condition-it can cause serious plugging up of airways, leading to severe bronchitis, infertility, pancreatic problems such as the hormones are unable to make their way out because of secretory mechanisms that become faulty, because the mucus becomes super thick in this condition...in the same way, the infertility results from the fact that the sperm may not be able to travel as rapidly in a male patient or a female's oviducts may not be able to transport the sperm for fertilization...many absorption problems ensue as well in this condition..usually children die young in this condition due to an infection that is respiratory.

in general it is a genetic metabolic disorder that secondarily affects the lungs. its main issue is that you cant digest fats, and yes a person must have some fat in their diet, contrary to the diet fads today. the CF patient also cannot absorb nutrients well thus they don't gain weight well, and have other problems for lack of vitamens, and life supportive nutrients normally gained through the intestinal tract. lungs secrete excessive sticky mucus which plugs airways and leads to secondary problems like atelectasis, pneumonia, or other lung infections.

i have only hit upon some of the generalized involvements of CF. there is much to know about this condition, but also understand that medical people can treat this condition much better than they could 20 years ago. thus the life span for CF patients is even up into the 50's whereas 3 or 4 decades ago CF patients died before 35 or 40.

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic condition, ie runs in families, where the normal enzymes are missing that help digest food and clear our mucous. This means then many lung problems and eating problems. However our science has improved enough to make a difference and prolong lives. I saw on TV a young girl, around 12 years old, who has dedicated her life to raising funds to help the research and medications needed, while taking care of herself as well. It may be in the future that they will be able to modify the genes responsible, so there is a lot of hope for the condition now.

Cystic Fibrosis is a defect in the gene that codes for the protein CFTR. When there is a defect on this type of protein in the body, Mucus which we usually produce in our respiratory, gastrointestinal, sweat glands and genitourinary system becomes overly viscous or sticky. That means the organs are easily blocked by the bodys own secretions. You get recurrent lung infections or pneumonia since you cant clear out your lungs. You get intestinal obstructions and obstructions of the pancreatic, biliary tract which are vital in the processing of nutrients. A great majority also cant bear children because tubes for reproduction becomes blocked by mucus.
