Glucose is very sticky. Of course, it's sugar. Our red blood cells live only for 3 months. The higher our blood sugars, the more it sticks to our red blood cells. A glycohemoglobin AKA HgbA1c will give a snap shot of how high your blood sugars have been over the past 3months by measuring how much is stick to your red blood cells For a non-diabetic it should be under 6%. For a well-control diabetic from 6-6.5% After that, your doctor will know you've been naughty. Do you understand the mechanics of diabetes? We ingest glucose, our pancreas then in response releases insulin to transport the glucose to our cells to be entered and then used by the cells for energy. If the cell does not allow the insulin carrying the glucose to enter, then the glucose stays in our blood stream, thereby creating a high glucose level in the blood. This is called insulin resistance. Meds like glucophage, metformin, fortamet, avandia, actos, diet and exercise help to open these sites of the cell allowing the insulin to enter. The second problem that occurs, usually over time, is that the beta cells in the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to carry the glucose to the cells. Therefore, the glucose just hangs out in the blood stream because it has no where else to go. This creates a high blood sugar level. Drugs such as Amaryl and of course insulin takes care of this combined with one of the others I've mentioned. Take it from me, I've been diabetic for 8years and I'm a nurse working for an endocrinologist. Been there, done that. Still doing it.

It is a great way to monitor how well you are controlling your glucose - blood sugar. It is very helpful when combined with your fingerstick testing to make sure that you are keeping your glucose within an acceptable range. An HbA1C test is a test that shows your blood sugar average for the last three months. A1C is short for Hemoglobin A1C.

It is in number form and depending on your age is number you should be.

For kids under 5, it should be 7.5-8.9% (This means that your blood sugar averages 100-200 range)
For kids 5-11 years old, it should be below 8% (your blood sugar ranges between 80-180)
For people 12 and over, it should be below 7.5% (this means your blood sugar ranges between 70-150)

It's a test to measure you blood sugar level over a 2-3 month period i believe, i'm not sure about the months but it's around there. Basically the test shows your overal blood sugar over a time frame and how well you have managed it. This enables Dr's to adjust or change your blood sugar medications etc. =)
