I've always thought they were vegetables, but recently I've come to realize that they are kinda both. For everyday life they are a vegetable (Would you eat any other fruit on rice??), but scientifically they are a fruit.

Tomatoes are consider vegetable. Because they are a rich source of lycopene, a carotenoid that is a powerful antioxidant. This chemical substance—found in processed as well as fresh tomatoes—may lower the risk of certain diseases, including some cancers, heart disease and macular degenerative disease (a cause of blindness in the elderly).
Tomatoes also contain vitamin C and vitamin A. Tomatoes that are vine-ripened are higher in vitamin C than greenhouse tomatoes. Fresh tomatoes contain more vitamin C than those that are processed or cooked.

A tomato is a fruit, plain and simple. It grows on trees, it has seeds and a watery meat. Its a fruit and anyone who says different is also a fruit.

Strangely, the US Government has classified it as a vegetable because of a fruit import tariff back in the lat 1800's.
