From my own knowledge, I know of the followig supermarkets that operate near where I live in the UK:

1. TESCO - market leader by a long shot, lots of stores, sells pretty much everything a reguloar supermarket does.

2. SOMERFIELD - cheaper than Tescos, again sells pretty much the same but without the clothes, electricals etc etc

3. SAINSBURY'S - probably about the same as Tescos, although has less stores.

4. ASDA - good-quality supermarrket, cheaper than most but offers the same amount of stores and products.

5. WAITROSE - generally thought to be the high-class supermarket chain, sells more specialist goods as well as regular stuff, more expensive.

6. LIDL / ALDI / NETTO - originally from countries like Germany, Scandinavia etc - good quality food at very very cheap prices, but none of it is the big brands. Not that highly respected

7. M&S SIMPLY FOOD - a branch of Marks & Spencers stores that sells only Marks & Spencers food. Good-quality, own-branded food, somewhat expensive though. Lots of people shop here for special treats at Christmas etc.

Think thats all I can think of - personally Ishop at a combo of Lidl for basics & regulars, Tescos or Asdas for the stuff Lidl doesn't sell.

I work at Tesco so I do most of my shopping there coz I get discount. Saying that all the others have their good points, Asda have good special offers, Sainsburys have a great salad bar and fish counter, Morrisons have a great bakery and counters, Aldi and Lidl have fantastic value on the odd bits and for frozen food value you can't beat Farm Foods. No wonder my shopping takes ages!!!

ASDA. Loyal to Asda. Value, varieties and staff. Home shopping is also a big help as I do not drive. The local store also recently became larger and open to 10pm and there is another within 7 mins which is 24/7.

What kind of a question is that. Everyone knows sainsbury is the best and tesco is the crappest. To be honest I have visited tesco a few times and dont really know what the fuss is about. All their stuff is second grade rubbish and fruits are nearly going off. I go for sainsbury.

I like waitrose, but its the same old story really, some items I can only get in Sainbury or Tesco, then when your in tesco or sainsbury, you see they are only promoting their own goods, i.e, could not get Andrex toilet roll in 2's or 4's, but only in 8's, but they have plenty of their own brand, same as at Christmas time, cant get small pickles, i.e, red cabbage, onions, etc, large or their own brand....it makes me sick how they try to monopolise what we buy, I refuse to be bullied into it, leave the shop with what I want and if I need to go elsewhere to get the rest sobeit.....

My personal favourite is Waitrose. Most of their food is ethically sourced and they support British Farmers.
I love Ocado their home delivery service and I love the advert jingle,
"I am the Ocado man and I come from down your way...."
Waitrose does a great Caesar Salad, good bread and stocks interesting chocolate. If you shop on a Friday night on the Finchley Road not only can you celebrity spot, you will find many single and attractive young men in beers, wines and spirits.
Yeah Waitrose does it for me!!

I love Tesco for range and variety and can spend hours in the big one near us, but cant stand the Metro stores. I like Asda too, our local one provides free door to door transport so thats a bonus.

Aldi! Just needs a little perseverence with the labels. Get the weekly specials news letter e-mailed to you. Great bargins to be had. Try Lidl also.
