When a person is confirmed dead, the heart can be harvested immediately & must be transplanted within 24 hours.

Dead people? are you kidding me? I just Donated my heart the other day.

Just kidding! They normally do it at an Hospital. They keep the body alive even though there is no brain activity. They do it so the organs stay a live.

Oh, by the way, I hope you are not asking this because you are trying to commit suicide. There was a case near my house where a kid went in to the hospital filled out a donor list. Then went back out in to the car and blew his head off. He was a bright kid that could have gone further in life.

Hearts and other organs all have time limits and they are also variable so you could only get a ball park time on it. I would imagine to get the answer you are looking for I would contact Deborah Heart and Lung Hospital in New Jersey.

As far as I know they are one of the leaders in this area of expertise.

Yes, that's how it always happens. They wouldn't just take a heart from a living person.
If the person has only been dead for an hour or so, they can still utilize the heart.

Unless it is removed immediately after death (or as soon as possible) and placed in a specially cooled sterile container, it will start deteriorating within 30 minutes.

Yes, it's done all the time. That's where they get "donor" organs. They can't take one from someone who still needs their heart..that's just silly.
