Hydroponics, actually the plants are not grown in just water, there is a loose medium(sand, pearlite) for the roots and water with nutrient solution flows through it.

You can get a setup at just about any home & garden store. They say that the crops are better for you, and I have had some peppers that were hydroponically grown. Much more robust than the ones grown in typical soil conditions.

hydroponics. i love hydroponically grown lettuces b/c you get the root and they stay fresher and last much longer in the refrigerator
