There are, if you will, "levels" of vegetarianism, as well as lovely technical terms for them.

An "ovolactovegtarian" consumes eggs and milk.

A "lactovegarian" consumes milk but not eggs; an "ovovegetarian" consumes eggs, but not milk.

Then there's the pseudovegetarians: "pescovegetarians" consume fish and seafood products; "pollovegetarians" consume chicken.

There's also, interestingly enough, "fruitarians" who consume primarily or exclusively fruit.

Yes, you can still be a vegetarian and eat cheese. If it bothers you that much, find a cheese company that does not sell the calves into the veil industry or become a vegan.

You're thinking vegan. A vegitarian and a vegan are similar, but different. A vegitarian does not eat meat, but can eat milk, eggs, and other products that come from animals. Vegans on the other hand do not eat meat, nor foods made with products that come from animals. Cheese, chocolate, cookies, cakes, pizza, for example. So unless you're a vegan then don't worry about it.

Milk doesn't support the veal industry necessarily. But the thing with cheese is this: It contains rennet, and rennet is made from cows' stomachs. Therefore, cheese in not vegetarian. There are cheese substitutes that are soy-based. If you don't want to give up cheese and want to be a vegetarian, try those soy-based cheeses.

Many cheese loving vegetarians eat only animal rennet free cheeses. Animal rennet is usually the stomach lining of a calf and it contains the enzymes needed for cheese.

I do know that horizon brand cheese and MOST cabot brand cheeses are animal rennet free. There is a list on the internet of brands that don't use the stuff. Here is the link:

Its not like you get a badge, or have to adhere to someone elses standards. Eat veggies for heath reasons, have some cheese if it makes you happy!! Dont get bulled over by the political side of this. Do what works for you.

Vegetarians just don't eat meat. It is vegans that don't eat any products from animals (eggs, cheese, milk, gelatin.)

Yeah go ahead no ones stopping you! You are just a vegatarian though, not vegan. Make sure you know the difference.

Ha, and if only you knew how they get that milk out of the cows utters! But then again if you go to a mom and pop farm (unlikey in US) They dont hook up their cows udders to machines to pump out the milk.

VEGAN!!
