Wow, this turned out to be more of a stumper than I expected. The best info I could find for you was from Terri Warren of WebMD who said, "It is true that having HSV 2 protects against getting HSV 1, but there is controversy about whether HSV1 protects against HSV 2 or not. There are two large studies with very different results. At a minimum, HSV 1 keeps the acquisition of HSV 2 more likely to be unrecognized."

For what it's worth, HSVI and HSVII only share about 50% of their DNA, but it's the proteins expressed on the surface that make the difference. My advice is to call your husband out as wrong for saying "cannot". That's never correct in medicine. You can certainly get HSV1 and 2 at the same time, or within a few days. You can get both if you are immune compromised.

You don't have to have a weak immune system to get both. It's very common. While having any viral infection causes your body to produce antibodies to fight the infection, they can not prevent you from getting another virus. HSV1 and HSV2 are two different viruses, and having one doesn't protect from having another in any way.
