I don't eat dogs, but why are people so offended by that concept? Do the dogs taste bad? Why does the same thing go for eating things like snakes?

Yeah, pigs are smarter than dogs and some people have them as pets and still make bacon.

Becuase in western culture dogs, along with cats are domesticated animals. They serve as compaion to many people, some people love their pets and treat them like family members. My parents have a Beagle that eats better than most people, steak, mashed potatos, you name it. Dogs work in airports sniffing for bombs, they help the blind, and so on. Here in Germany people bring there dogs into bars with them.

I personaly have nothing against the practice myself, as long as you're nt eating someones freind. Being overly curious I woudn't mind trying it myself, I've eaten snake, ostrich, buffalo, and they're all yummy, the onlything I wouldn't try is people

Dogs are seen as pets and even family in most households, so they are not eaten.

I ate dog in China thinking it was chops, and thats what it tastes like...so its not the taste...its the concept. Western Cultures just don't eat dog...and consider it barbaric..

I put a string of dog recipes on ym recipe site...They were there on a blog and I copied it...if you want to have a look...and there is also a horrific story of the dog farms and the dog markets in Korea on Newslink..

I'm from Taiwan where people, especially males like to eat dogs in the winter. They say that dog meat keeps you warm and makes guys "strong", and that's the main reasons for Taiwanese to eat dogs. Chinese and Koreans eat dogs too. But Koreans eat during the hot summer days because they believe that dog meat makes them sweat, and that's good for their health. Eating dogs started at least from Han Dynasty when people were encouraged to breed dogs and to eat them as intake of protein. Actually there were government officers who were responsible for breeding dogs in the palace. Black dogs were more desirable because they gave men more "power". I've never ate any dogs because I like them very much. As to why eating dogs is such a taboo, I think it has to do with probably 2 reasons: 1. Dogs have long become humans' pets and friends. You just don't want to kill and eat your friends, do you? 2. The way to kill dogs for their meat is very brutal. I don't know how they do it here in Taiwan, but I've heard how they do it in China. They either break the dogs' necks or beat the poor creatures to death. They do it to ensure that the meat remains tender. If you saw the way the dogs were killed, you wouldn't want to eat dogs, and you wouldn't want others to eat either. I hope this helps.

In Vietnam eating dog is seen the same as eating chicken, beef or pork. I worked with a person who came from Vietnam and when he first went to a supermarket saw cans with a picture of a dog on it. The correct assumption would be that the picture on the can would represent what is in the can. He was unpleasantly suprised when he realized his mistake.

Good question! Would things have been different if we had domesticated pigs or cows as pets? But since the days of prehistoric man, dogs have been hunting mates, protected people, and provided companionship. That's why (I think mostly the protection thing...pigs aren't very good against saber-tooth tigers) they were breeded to be our companions these days.

And we can't eat our best friends, can we?

In the Philippines eating dog meat is a delicacy mainly enjoyed by group of men drinking- called PULUTAN, they eat it while drinking alcohol. The dish is cooked in heavy chili, but I heard it is delicious. I will not eat it because I like dogs as pet. I can eat other meat such as cows, ducks chicken, pigs because I see them as nutrition and cannot imagine them as pet or part of my household.

We don't eat dogs because they are domesticated animals. They're are too close to home. They are thought of more as a pet then any kind of cuisine. I think it would be hard to eat something we think of as a friend, or protector.

meh. I think it has to do with the domestication of dogs. In western culture we see them as companions and not food. I think that is why most people have that hang -up. In india the cow is sacred, and peopel dont eat cow. Its just different perspectives
