Alt. names- Cervical Swab, Low Vaginal Swab (LVS), High Vaginal Swab (HVS), Swab of urethral discharge and/or urethral sampling using fine wire swab. Smears will be transported to the laboratory in a suitable container.
Indication:
For identification of Infection with Trichomonas, Gardnerella, Candida sp. and pathogenic bacteria.
Investigation of mucopurulent cervicitis, vaginal discharge , urethral discharge, pelvic inflammatory disease , endometritis, postpartum fever, perinatal infection and a routine during ante natal check up.

You might have made a mistake there is a HSV which is the Herpes Simplex Virus. There is HBS which is Hepatitis B Surface Virus. HPV which is the Human paloma Virus. I work in the lab and unless there is a new terminology I have yet to hear of the HVS. The only other alternative is a doctor might mean Herpes Virus Simplex.

HVS means high vaginal swab. The doctor or nurse will take a swab from inside the vagina and send it to a laboratory where they will culture the swab to see what grows. If they suspect you have a yeast infection they will look for that but they will be able to look for bacterial infections as well.
