Man, some of these people are rude! I think your concern is valid. It's too bad people can be so ignorant.
Just like food preparers need to be careful about listing foods that cause known allergies, they have an obligation to be honest about other content as well. The FDA does regulate who can adverstise their products as "vegan" though the requirents for "vegetarian" are much more loose, for example they may contain eggs or dairy. Too be on the safe side I would only trust products labeled as vegan.
In the case of dining out, when you find meat in your dish, bring it up! There are many reasons why a person might not want to eat it. It is not limited to vegetarianism. It could be a religious observation or a health reason. I've found that even if restaurant staff do not agree with your cause, they are more than happy to oblige as long as you are clear about what you want and let them know when you don't get that.

Food preparers and companies should know that there is a huge market for vegetarians and vegans. Going to a health food store helps - because the carry a wider variety of vegetarian and organic foods from certified growers. One way to check up on a restaurant is to see if they have a menu on line before you go. Check out the menu first and if it looks promising then go. If you discover that they add meat to your food then be sure to let them know about the problem - you can wait until done and fill out a survey card or talk to a manager when you are leaving and tell them that you are disappointed and do not plan to visit them again. Money talks.

In the UK all packaged food has labels that say suitable for vegetarians or suitable for vegans. They are much more aware of dietary issues than Americans. I would never accept food with meat in it. If you asked for a dish without meat and they served you chicken, why didn't you send it back? I would have. No one is monitoring this but you and there are places, like citysearch that you can post reviews of restaurants that mess up like this. Don't let restaurants get away with this. You are paying for their food. If you don't like it, walk away or never go back.

For restaurants, it is hard, but for packaged food I can help. Many packaged foods are certified as kosher. Kosher certifications indicate if products contain meat or dairy products, unless it is already clearly stated in the name of the product, because Jewish law dictates that the two cannot be eaten together. If you buy products with a kosher certification, it should be easy to determine which ones contain hidden animal-based ingredients and which ones don't.

nicely, it could be large.............. pondering they have already categorised each factor on each Label of each nutrition obtainable (nicely, almost ninety 8% of it), Kosher, Lactose illiberal, Peanut hypersensitive reactions, why no longer incorporate Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten unfastened? yet, would I ask....why are those individuals that are particularly allergic or elect to consume a definite team of ingredients no longer knowledgeable in what they are able to or won't have the ability to consume? Labels are complicated adequate precise now, fat content textile (solid or undesirable fat?) ldl cholesterol quantities (solid or undesirable) sugar, sodium ranges (some are solid for some, some, no longer so solid) how huge can the field be for this variety of label? i'm sorry......did no longer propose to ask a question right here, final analysis is, I agree. Sorry to have argued the factor on the two sides yet it relatively is basically how i've got self assurance. i'm hoping you and your loved ones have an exceedingly Merry Christmas!

If you say you are allergic to eggs, you can be sure they wont muck that one up. I am not rude but I tell them I do not eat meat and is there any trace of meat in the dish. It is pretty painful to do and does spoil the dining experience.
Veggie burgers are nice however they can be cooked on a grill along with meat, so you may as well eat meat.
It is hard and frustrating, I would just prefer to eat at home.
You must remember we are the minority and need more voices. If there is something to be done, count me in.

If someone is claiming their menu contains vegetarian or vegan meals then YES, they should get it certified. Just like organic foods get certified.
But understand that having a quality control standard like this certified COSTS BIG MONEY, so expect your meal prices to go up significantly.

I think all packaged foods that are suitable for veg*n's should be labled that it's suitable for vegetarians or vegans just like these foods are labled for allergies and Kosher if applicable. Kosher is a choice diet as well and there is no reason why veg*n diets shouldn't be considered just as important.

And who is going to pay for that? Organic cost so much becasue of the low volume and higher costs. Much of which is to pay for the certification. The FDA does not have time to certify every farmer in the US and inspect to make sure that no bugs get into your peanut butter. The average person eats 100 spiders in thier lifetime and a bit of bug in your processed food is inevitable. You probably will eat 100 lbs of bugs and other small anuimals in your lifetime without even knowing it, so quite driving up the cost of my food with your BS.
