Traditional dim sum (in large restaurants in Chinatowns) consists of an enormous variety of small snack-sized dishes served from trays. You look at the dishes and decide what you want or what is appealing to you. If you are allergic to wheat, you should avoid the steamed buns, since although they are very tasty, they usually made with wheat flour. Choosing the stir-fried vegetables and meats should be fine, although you may need to ask whether any gravies are made with wheat. You can of course, eat rice. If you are very concerned, most restaurants serving dim sum also accept ala carte orders, so you could order a special dish that has absolutely no wheat products in it and eat that while everyone else is eating the dim sum.

There are TONS of types of dim sum. Some have wheat, others are made from rice paper. I would ask about each individual piece that you'd like to have.

If you're going to a restaurant for the dim sum, try to call ahead and talk to the manager. Most restaurant managers will bend over backwards to find you something that you'll like and won't die from if it means your business. He or She may even be able to have some special wheat free dim sum made up for you, if need be. Just give them a day or two's notice if possible!

Happy eating!

Hmm, depends on how allergic you are to wheat. Many of the steamed dim sum are wrapped in a flour based wrap. Those that are not have amost invariably been seasoned with soy sauce. Soy sauce, as you probably know, is made with wheat. There may be few things you can eat there, and even if you ask, they may either not know, or may not feel obligated to tell you.

Dr. House must be a real physician. Who else would screw up an answer as easy as what you are asking? The improperly trained, who are paid too much to admit they were trained wrong, cannot even associate eczema with gluten intolerance? Holy gut pains Batman! If you google "gluten intolerance eczema Dr. Alessio Fasano University of Maryland" read many articles that clearly associate many skin conditions with Gluten Intolerance which is seperate from Celiac Disease. What do I know about this? I am celiac. I am Asperger. I know more about this disease than anyone in the world, and I can source all that I say. Gluten intolerance has been determined a species level problem through genetic testing. They just have not had the decency to tell you yet!

Dim sum means "snack". It's a variety of foods served with a variety of sauces. The only thing you might have trouble with are the noodles and potstickers.
