How does an insulin pump help with your diabetes?

I have been on a pump for about 4 years. It freed me from having to give 4-6, or more, shots a day. And I sitll coulnd't control my diabetes with all of those shots!! When you have the pump, you have insulin going into you 24/7, have to have one needle prick (putting in the cannula, or insert, like an IV but it doesn't go into the vein) every 3 days, you refill the insulin when it is getting low in the cartridge (some hold only 200-250 units; others hold 300), your blood sugars stay a lot more stable, you can live your life according to what you want to do, when you want to do it, rather than having to live your life according to when you have to eat and have a shot. You have lots more freedom as to when you eat, etc. You can sleep in and not worry about your blood sugar being too high as you already have insulin going thru you to keep it level.

It is an awesome thing to use and I recommend it to anyone who has to take insulin. Even children as young as 3 are using them (with adult supervision, that is). They have some that are water resistent so you can go swimming or be in the shower with one, but I find it more convenient to take it off for that amount of time--and I don't end up with high blood sugars either! And you can put the pump in your pocket or get a belt type of thing from the pump company, or have someone make one, to put the pump in. I got a belt thing and it works out great! Everyone thinks that it is a beeper, not an insulin pump. And you normally can't see it under your clothes, unless they are skin tight!

Talk with your endocrinologist about it. IF you have insurance, find out from them what kind they will cover and how much of the pump and its supplies tjhey will cover. Do research on any of them that your insurance will cover, compare them, etc. In order to get it, you will need a prescription for the pump and supplies from your doctor and maybe even a letter or two from your doctor explaining to the insurance why you need one and why it would be good for you to have.

I have had a pump for four years now. I have noticed that my blood sugar levels stay about the same (around 120) all day long 24/7. With the shots that did not happen. I would either be way to low if I didn't eat something or way to high if I forgot to give the shot right on time. With the pump you get the continuous small amount of insulin delivered all the time which makes a huge difference in your test results. No more up and down blood sugar results. It also did miracles for my A1C number as well. Went from around 11 down to 7!!!

When you use the pump, you must install a CANNULA beneath the skin of the abdomen. Simply put, that is like a large needle left permanently in place under the skin, like an intravenous line. This CAN be painful. Depending on the manufacturer, the cannula must be change frequently, usually once every week. I guess getting stuck once a week is a bit better than getting stuck 2-3 times a day. But the cannula is often a source of infection, and abdominal infections can be particularly nasty. You should ASK this friend first, to see if he actually wants a pump. Many diabetics don't.

You have the pump in your body and you refill it as u need it. You release insulin on unit bases on specific times. So, you don't need to inject yourself everytime. You then need to refill the pump when you are low on insulin. Get more info from your endocrinologist.

It makes it so you don't have to give yourself insulin shots everyday. My aunt has to refill her pump every 3 days.
