I want to begin hosting an annual party, but all of my firends have claimed the good ones! All the holidays are taken; one of my friends has an international foods party; one has a storytelling party; super bowl- check; Oscars- yup; wine tasting, done; game night, been there; bad-taste party, that one is done as well. Yes, we are crazy party people, but surely there are some not too inexpensive, fun-but-not-kitchy themes that we are leaving out!

I don't mean something "ADULT". I mean, just a creative non-Disney-movie-kiddie-party theme.

Hey! Your group of friends sounds like a fun group. I'm the main party-giver in my circle. Since most things are taken, I'd throw an "All the Theme Parties are Taken so This is a Party about Nothing." Go from there. You can have blank invitations on front, no decorations; have people bring their own food and game ideas but have lots of booze. Or, after they get there you tell them that you have nothing planned but they have to think up everything and make their own fun.

You've had a lot of great answers. You didn't mention Halloween but I imagine someone is already throwing that party too. You have so much room to work with Halloween parties!
I also liked the idea someone gave about the "all the good ideas are taken so this is a party with no theme" that is a cute idea. Blank invites would be hilarious! But, kinda boring maybe.
I think just throwing a party, cook-out type with lots of good food, good booze and good friends is the way to go!

Claire,
I know your question is from years ago, but I have several terrific ideas for you. We have been throwing an annual Groundhog Day Party for over 20 years and the last 10 or so have all been themed. Let me know if you are still looking for some ideas.

Make your party a fundraiser for your favorite charity. Ask everyone to bring a small donation and ask the charity to send you some brochures that you can display at your party. Obviously by supplying the food, you are doing your part and your friends won't mind kicking in $20 for the cause if they are well fed.

Have a color-theme party. White is easy to start with. Everyone must wear white, all decor is white, and -the hard part- all the food and drinks must be white! Pink and green aren't too hard either, but you could go for quite a few years before you run out of party themes!

We have 3 parties a year. We have Halloween costume party, ultra cheesy Valentines Day party and we throw a prom in the summertime.
Prom was a HUGE hit.
The possibilites are endless with a prom theme.
I vote prom.
You'll thank me.

Go to a dance studio, and take a lesson like salsa or swing all together.
Or if all of you want to pitch in bit, have an Arabian Nights themed party with exotic touches, drinks, foods, music... you could even hire a belly dancer who could perform/give a lesson in your home and/or a henna artist.
otherwise you could just go sky diving. Most places give group discounts;)
