I have always preferred the atmosphere of a homestyle country inn that is privately owned. They are quiet, relaxed, the service is great, the servings are huge, the food is simple but delicious (and not mass-produced), and there is often candlelight and fresh flowers. Meals tend to range from roast chicken breast and a good garden salad to steak and baked potatoes. Spaghetti, lasagna, and fish are also served. Often old hotels get converted into restaurants and these are nice as well, and offer more in the way of specialty dishes. Many have antiques, great ceilings, and fascinating histories, plus a gourmet menu that changes regularly (for about the same price as a chain restaurant). Any place like this that also serves homemade desserts and/or homemade ice cream is a bargain beyond dollars!

Dont go to a chain! Unless you are going to like a Morton's (figure $150 - $200 per plate). I would take her to a nice italian mom and pop restaurant. THose are often easy to find in small cities (small = smaller than nyc). Your food will be better and the experience should be nicer...also, consider telling the owners in advance so they can set up a really nice dinner table etc.

It's hard to say without knowing the specific area that you are eating in... But in my experience the Texas Roadhouses seem to allways have good service and good food... There are a couple local places that allways do, but as far as nation wide chains there's not many that I personally trust to have constant service..
