Cold sores are herpes. They are herpes simplex virus one. Herpes simplex virus 2 are genital herpes.
You DO NOT need to have sex to get herpes. Herpes is spread by skin to skin contact and sex. It can also be spread by other things like childbirth, but this is more rare.
Cold sores are usually spread by being kissed by someone who has the virus. So, if he was kissed when he was younger by maybe one of your parents, aunts, uncles, grandmother, whoever...if one of them has the virus on their lips or mouth area, he could have got it from them if they kissed him. You can also get cold sores from sharing chap stick or lipstick, even sharing a straw (for a soda or something). If whoever he was kissed by or shared something with had cold sores, then he probably got it that way. You don't need to have sex with someone to get cold sores.
Also, the girl above me is just completely wrong. Please do not listen to her. You DO NOT get herpes from not brushing your teeth long enough. Herpes is a virus it is not a bacteria. Bacteria are easily treated with medicine, but you can not get rid of viruses. There is no cure for them.

Yes cold sores are a form of herpies. You can also pass them from one person to another if you kiss them. But this form is caused by something in the body by a virus.

Yes, cold sores are caused by herpes simplex 1, the most common type of herpes. Simplex 2 is what causes genital herpes, though you can get simplex 1 on your genitals as well if you receive oral sex from someone who has a cold sore (or is about to get one -- you are contagious before the sore is visible).
Most people with cold sores were exposed to the virus between the ages of 3 to 5, and many times this exposure is from a family member who is also infected who kisses them hello or good night or etc. The symptoms typically then wait to develop until puberty.

Well, You said that he is 10 yrs. old mostly he just has to much bacteria growing in his mouth. He needs to brush longer like five minutes and use a mouth rise, salt & water will help. I would say brush after every meal especially after eating meat, clean the toungue hopefuly this would work.
