My boss is 23 today... on Monday, he went to the ER because he kicked a board... and the right side of his body became numb... he also lost his speach. Later that evening he got released... they told him that he had dehydration... Today, I got a call from his dad saying that he was going to the ER again. I asked why... he said that the same thing was happening, just on the opposite side. I am not too sure, but it sounds like a series of strokes to me... I have never heard of severe dehydration doing that to someone... and I have been to the hospital for dehydration myself.

I guess my question is what are the symptoms of a stroke... and is it possible for dehydration no matter how sever it is to do this to a person?

Stroke do not reverse themselves, how ever there are other possible causes like;

"Transient ischemic attacks", this is where a decrease in blood flow causes stroke like symptoms, and as soon as the blood flow returns he is better.

Another possible cause is called;

"Cluster headaches" This may or may not have the pain of a migraine, sometimes the person doesn't realize that this is coming on until they feel some numbness or visual disturbances, or some other form of nerve imparement.

Again this is self corrected when the blood flow returns to normal.

( TO MY KNOWLEDGE )
There is not really all that much that can be done for it. There is a medication that they use for Migrains that they may try or they may have him start taking one baby asprin every other day. But that is about it.

PS: Don't forget to wish him Happy Birthday

i am an RN, used to work in a rehabilitation unit in a hospital, where we were a certified stroke center. to me, these symptoms are all sounding as if they may be a stroke: one-sided weakness/numbness/paralysis of the body, slurred or no speech, difficulty moving arms/legs on one side of the body, diffuculty finding the right words (aphasia), difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)...but seeing as he is 23, it may not be. 23 seems awfully young to have a stroke, but im sure it could happen. anyways i would refer him to a nurologist so the neurologist could make a positive diagnosis, whatever the cause may be.

It could be one of two things....a stroke or a bleed caused from the head injury. This does not ring of dehydration. I am not a doctor though.

Below you will find some information on strokes. I hope your boss is doing better!
