It can't be called a platemat, because it's not only for the plate. It is for the ENTIRE placesetting to rest upon. Placesetting=plate, cup, saucer, salad plate, cutlery, and glassware.

Place mats set your place and let the hostess see that everybody will be accomodated properly.
A platemat doesn't make sense.

They hold your whole table "placing" such as your fork, spoon, glass, and plate. Not just your plate.
