I was wondering if, say, Japanese people actually eat Ramen or if its a sort of Americanized version of the Orient, like Olive Garden isn't really Italian, or Taco Bell isn't really Mexican?

♡WE↓ LOVE RAMEN!!♡ (*^o^*)
I'm an American living in Japan and my hubby is Japanese and WE eat ramen a few times a month.
Mostly this kind of ramen:

We got out to have it or I cook it here at home as well.
Occasionally we eat this kind of 'instant' ramen as a snack:

It's very popular because it's fast, easy and convenient! You can buy it just about anyplace and there are many types to choose from!
~I'm originally from California and every time we go to our home there in the US if I give my hubby those 'Top Ramen' noodles

he always asks 'Is that ramen?!'(*^o^*)
I guess it's just that ramen in Japan is different from that in the US. Probably the same as Taco Bell differs from tacos you'd get in Mexico. So we usually go to the Japanese market and buy it and other Japanese foods there.
Hope this helps! If you ♡love ramen you have to come to Japan and have it here! It's good stuff! There's even a 'Ramen Museum' in Yokohama that's like a little ramen town. You can eat some of the best ramen from all over Japan here!(^_-)-☆

Yes, here in Japan the Japanese people most definitely DO eat ramen!!!! It's very popular and delicious!!

The version YOU get might be an 'Americanised' version though, I've heard of people talking about all sorts of WEIRD flavoured ramen! In Japan the flavours are much better! People don't just eat ramen in restaurants though, if they're really in a hurry they go to the local convenience store, or supermarket, and by a cup noodle pot, or a UFO type ramen bowl. You can add the hot water in the store after purchasing it, and then sit on a bench outside the shop to eat it... with the chopsticks you get free! Also - and this is MY favourite (second only the the Ringer Hut restaurant...!) you can buy DIY packets of ramen. You can add whatever vegetables and other stuff you want.

It's important to remember that sandwiches are NOT very popular in Japan, so for lunch people often have either a bento lunchbox with rice and other things, or they have ramen. Of course there are other options too, but in the winter ramen is very popular!

As for Japanese people living in other countries, they would normally buy their ramen from the import stores. The stuff in major supermarkets is liable to have been altered to suit the tastes of the natives. So to get the real stuff, it has to be either bought at an import store, or home made!!!!

There are many versions of Ramen noodles. They have them in China, Japan, and Korea, all in the style of the region (from what I know, I'm sure there are other Asian countries that stylize them as well.)

Since I only know about the Korean versions... I'll try to explain.

The maruchan brand ramen noodles that you probably see in the grocery store are very Americanized.

If you go to a Korean grocery (which you'll find in nearly every big city), there are roughly 20 or so brands of Korean ramen. Definitely not Americanized.

Hope that helps!

Well hon. In asia we do eat instant noodles that are pretty close to Ramen noodles here. But the way we prepare it is different.
We boil the water first, then we put the noodles and the packaged ingredients in.( Some people put meats and shrimps and other ingredient into the noodles too.) And pour it out in a bowl and eat it with fresh vegetables like bean sprouts.
I love those noodles but I don't like Ramen because the noodles are too thicks and tasteless.

Japanese do eat instant noodles, but it's only spur of the moment...like, say if they're in a rush or so. But a lot of college/univ. students do eat instant noodle.
In Japan, there is a lot of ramen shops. They're basically you're sit down noodle shop. It's nothing close to your instant noodles. There's meat (usually pork in thin slices), onions, spices (not spicy) and garnished with seaweed....and something a boiled egg, and of course their broth.
Different regions of Japan have their own authentic ramen...It's interesting trying them as they're sought of famous from these areas.

Ramen noodles in individual packages are very popular throughout Asia. But they're not always called ramen. For example, in Indonesia, they're called mie. They're often used as snacks, like we use them. Sometimes, they're made into a meal by adding vegetables. Sometimes they're cooked and then fried to make fried noodles. Generally, the flavorings in the packages sold in Asia are much more interesting than the flavorings found in the packages here. Indo-Mie, for example, is a great brand from Indonesia, whose flavor is much, much better than your average US supermarket brand.

Ramen noodles is the American version. If you go into any Chinese or any type of Asian grocery, they have the noodles but they aren't called Ramen and they taste a bit different.
