I do all the time... soak them in water an hour before to get them water logged... when you put them over the coals, it will make a lot of smoke and lower the cooking temp of the grill. Low and slow with lots of smoke it the best tasting meat.

Soak in water first for a few hours, I'd follow the other persons suggestion to wrap in foil or put into a foil pan atop the coals.

A better way would be to soak them for about 2 hrs, the wrap them in tin foil and poke holes in the foil to allow the smoke to escape. It makes for easier clean up.

Soak them in water first for the proper amount of smoking otherwise they burn up too fast and you don't get the needed effect from the wood.

yep...use a Nice Hard wood ( Oak is good and gives a nice flavor to your meat ) try and soak the wood for a few hours first . Enjoy :)
