whats the difference between herpes and cold sores?

Cold sores are small, red blisters that crop up near the lips or on them. More rarely, they appear on the roof of the mouth. Despite their name, cold sores actually have nothing to do with colds; they're usually caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). This is different to the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), which often causes genital herpes. All though you may have Herpes simplex 1...it does not mean that you have simplex 2.
